The calendar has turned to May, even if the weather still seems like it’s stuck back in March. Despite the persistent cold, windy, and rainy conditions, early May reminds us that it’s time to honor our mothers.
Mother’s Day was first officially observed on the second Sunday of May in 1914, while the earliest known references to establish “Mother’s Friendship Day” occurred way back in 1868. Fast forward to modern times, and Americans spend billions of dollars each year on flowers, candy, spa treatments, jewelry, and greeting cards. Believe it or not, Mother’s Day is now the most popular day of the year to frequent a restaurant.
While commercialization of this day has drawn its fair share of criticism, I urge all of you to instead focus on the little things, which may not cost a dime. Whether it is your wife, daughter, grandmother, sister, or mother, take the time on May 8 to tell those special women how important they are in your life. While there is nothing wrong with bestowing presents, the far more valuable gift you can provide is your time, attention, and unconditional love.
