Do I need to have a business license to open a business checking account?

Only if you are using a name other than your legal name (a Doing Business As, aka DBA). A business license or Certificate of Assumed Name is typically required to verify your operating title in that case.

Do I need a business account separate from my personal account if I am a sole proprietor?

It is not a legal requirement. However, it is highly recommended. Having a business account keeps your personal expenses separate, which simplifies taxes and it also help to build credibility.

What documents to I need in order to open a business checking account?

You will need:

  • An Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) for sole proprietors.
  • Business Formation Documents
  • Personal identification such as a driver’s license or passport
  • Doing Business As (DBA) Statement if you aren’t operating under your legal name.
  • Business License
