Vacationing With Your Debit Card

Be it summer or winter, we Iowans love to travel and explore new places. Using a debit card offers greater safety compared to carrying cash and is more convenient than writing checks, especially when traveling. By following a few simple guidelines, you can ensure a safe and worry-free trip.

Keep your Bank Informed

Informing your bank about your travel plans is the best way to prevent blocked debit card transactions, especially when traveling internationally. Most banks automatically restrict international transactions due to the risk of fraud. With proper notification, your debit card transactions can be safely accepted wherever you go.

Additionally, avoid the inconvenience of having your card blocked due to suspicious activity by keeping your bank informed.

Bring Fewer Cards

If your card gets blocked for any reason, having a backup payment method can provide peace of mind.

When vacationing, bring only the cards you plan to use, plus one backup. Ensure all cards are well-protected and monitor your balances when possible. Be cautious when accessing financial accounts online or using public Wi-Fi connections. Double-check your purchases when you return home. Don’t forget about your digital wallet; most debit cards can be uploaded to your mobile app, eliminating the need to carry them physically.

Tips for Safely Shopping and Using an ATM

Using your PIN (Personal Identification Number) creates a digital trail and can help prevent your card from being blocked.

Be vigilant when using an ATM. Observe your surroundings and be cautious of anyone loitering nearby. Always use ATMs in well-lit areas, preferably inside a facility. Inspect the ATM for card skimmers, which can be attached to the machine or nearby fixtures. Cover the keypad as you enter your PIN to protect your information.
