Back to School Funding

From the President's Desk...

It’s early August, and that means back to school time is here! Families with children of any age know how expensive this time of year can be. Here are some tips to manage those expenses, not only in 2026, but perhaps more importantly in the future.

  1. Plan, Plan, Plan – Create a list that includes everything your student will need, such as basic school supplies, clothes, textbooks, shoes, athletic and musical equipment, etc. Don’t forget the sneaky costs that will come up quickly, such as school lunches, club and activity fees, and school pictures. Double check your list against those provided by the school to ensure you haven’t missed anything. Once your list is complete don’t deviate as you shop, to avoid expensive impulse buying.
  2. Shop at Home – Take inventory of what you may have around the house, as some of those needs might be hiding in plain sight. Check the kids’ backpacks which could uncover a hidden treasure of supplies ready for the new school year.
  3. Establish Priorities – Understand the difference between things your children want and things they truly need. Perhaps allow each child to obtain one item from the “want” list, or delay purchasing some of those desired items for a few months. The budget can quickly be blown if too many dollars are directed toward nonessential purchases.
  4. Establish the Budget – Speaking of a budget, it doesn’t sound like any fun, but establishing one is important. A reasonable budget helps make sure you don’t set yourself up for failure; after all, no one wants to face overdraft fees and high credit card balances. Establish spending limits, and more importantly, stick to them. Look for sales, which are common this time of year.
  5. Save Ahead of Time – While it won’t help this school year, start a savings plan now to help with next summer’s spending. Even putting away as little as $25/month/child can give you a very helpful cushion when the 2027 back to school season arrives. Even better – set up an automatic checking to savings transfer plan each month to fund this future expense.
